The Talented Mr. Taji

The Talented Mr. Taji

Morning Folks,

This post is all about me! me! me!

Actually no its just a fun post about another talent I have which is Graphic Design. As you might have read somewhere in my blog. I work in the advertising business… and I held the position of graphic designer (then art director… then senior art director.. all the way up to creative director) which means that I usually don’t need anyone’s help when I have design promo material for myself (like my website) or things like the Voiceover-casting.com button that I made for Brian Hudson a month or so ago you can see it on the side panel of my blog —>

If you would like to check out my design portfolio (its not really that new… I havent updated it since 2007) you can download it here

I rarely do freelance design work these days as it takes too long but I had offered Brian Hudson to do the talent profile badge for produlz.com which is the company that owns the website I host this blog with voiceover-casting.com.

For this endevour I will use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I wont get into he details of what the difference is between them but for those in the know how… one is for Raster Images (photoshop) and the other is for Vector images (illustrator). Read More

The Voice Over Entrance Exam – A Taji Book Review

May 12, 2009  |  Articles, Voice Over Misc  |  2 Comments

Morning Folks,

Just in case you missed it… Peter O’Connell of audio’connell e-published a free Voice Over related ebook that you can download here:

www.voiceoverentranceexam.com

The book is called “The Voice Over Entrance Exam” and was brought to my attention via a tweet from Michelle Summers of VOplanet.com and I believe Paul Strikwerda mentioned it in his Double Dutch Blog.

The book is 53 pages long (its in PDF format) so it is more of a booklet than a full fledged book. It is structured more like a Power Point Presentation than the standard format of an ebook with about 8 pages containing a computer graphic dedicated to separate the chapters as well as a title and dedication page… so more like 43 pages of actual material. For Want Of A Nail The Kingdom Was Lost

There is an old proverb that goes:

For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

What I’d like to talk about today is something that affects nearly all of us as Voice Over Artists. We cannot live without it and if its done badly can be one of the most torturous parts of our job.

The Script.

I believe that I recently mentioned that I was in the middle of recording an Audio Book. The script works on my two main strengths… English and Arabic. Its a bilingual text and usually a book like this wouldn’t take me any time at all to record.

Unfortunately, I had not read the full script of the book before accepting the job. I had read the original book in Arabic and thought that I wouldn’t have any problems reading it translated.

Suffice it to say that the book is an excellent Read but was not written to be Read Out Load. When reading a passage to yourself you can always go back and make sense of it … you can do this over and over until the whole structure of the sentence becomes clear to you. Now imagine doing this while recording a 182 page book…. out loud… Doesn’t work. Read More

Going Green: Alternatives to a VO's Printed Script

Morning Folks,

It’s the weekend in Egypt (yes over here Thursday is the last working day of the week) and as I was going through my regular morning RSS browsing (I am a big technology buff and like to read a few tech blogs like www.engadget.com and www.gizmodo.com) I stumbled on a review of Amazon’s new Kindle DX… this is what it looks like:

Amazon Kindle DX

Here are a few of its relevant specs (relevant to my blog… you can read the full set of specs here) :

Beautiful Large Display: 9.7″ diagonal e-ink screen reads like real paper; boasts 16 shades of gray for clear text and sharp images

Built-In PDF Reader: Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go

Long Battery Life: Read for days without recharging

Pretty impressive huh! and I thought to myself… wouldn’t it be nice to replace my printer with something like that… I mean some of my clients (e-learning and such) actually ask me for lo fi Voice Over quality when I record so I actually just record with a regular computer mic (ok its a special mic that I came across a few years back and it was so outstanding that I am still able to sell VOs recorded with it) and when I record for that client I usually just read the script off the screen and thats the end of that.
