Going Green: Alternatives to a VO's Printed Script

Morning Folks,

It’s the weekend in Egypt (yes over here Thursday is the last working day of the week) and as I was going through my regular morning RSS browsing (I am a big technology buff and like to read a few tech blogs like www.engadget.com and www.gizmodo.com) I stumbled on a review of Amazon’s new Kindle DX… this is what it looks like:

Amazon Kindle DX

Here are a few of its relevant specs (relevant to my blog… you can read the full set of specs here) :

Beautiful Large Display: 9.7″ diagonal e-ink screen reads like real paper; boasts 16 shades of gray for clear text and sharp images

Built-In PDF Reader: Native PDF support allows you to carry and read all of your personal and professional documents on the go

Long Battery Life: Read for days without recharging

Pretty impressive huh! and I thought to myself… wouldn’t it be nice to replace my printer with something like that… I mean some of my clients (e-learning and such) actually ask me for lo fi Voice Over quality when I record so I actually just record with a regular computer mic (ok its a special mic that I came across a few years back and it was so outstanding that I am still able to sell VOs recorded with it) and when I record for that client I usually just read the script off the screen and thats the end of that. Here he is doing a FedEx Advert:

Casting Sites Roundup

Morning Y’all.

I wanted to take a step back from my back to basics category of blog posts and take a look at what’s happening with the VO casting scene. I don’t think I need to interview anyone at this point in time since most of these are my thoughts and are very editorial like…

So yeah I was reading the Vox Daily blog from Stephanie at Voices.com and they were mentioning that they had to change the look of their front page to this…

What you’ll  notice is that they no longer have that list of showcased voice over talent… most viewed… most listened… recently hired etc. Read More

How To Learn Any Accent

April 7, 2009  |  Articles, Edumification, Voice Over Misc  |  2 Comments  |

Today's post was inspired by that first youtube video I posted yesterday for Ms. Amy Walker accent maestro extraordinaire. The woman shifts from accent to accent seamlessly... and although she is able to perform 21 different accents. Some of her accents are much better than others. Apparently Ms. Walker has a website dedicated to teaching people how to speak in different accents... And in our business ' a definite plus to landing more jobs. Personally I wish I could do a light British one (where as on a more personal note I would much prefer knowing how to speak the welsh

OK voice actors. I’ve got a bone to pick.

I regularly run into actors who don’t know what they’re doing in front of the microphone. Actually, to be fair, they often know what it is they’re doing, but they rarely know why they do it.

A prime example of this is the proximity effect.
Loosely put, this states that the closer you get to a directional microphone, the more pronounced low frequency sound will become.
This is a good thing for a VO person to know. If you need to enrich the voice a little, well, move a little closer to the mic. Neat! Now we can all sound like James Earl Jones!
Yeah, but no …
